Ask your kid a question

Image
The following is a list of questions to be asked (without prompting) to each of my children, with the answers of each of my children, written EXACTLY as they said it. Some of these are quite astute, and others are just... funny... This was done December 24, 2016.  Jean-Alexandre was 22, Dominic was 18, Maryssa was 16, Raven was 15, Gabriel was 14 and Nicolas was 11. 1. What is something I say a lot? Jean-Alexandre: "I don't know, shuliyan." Dominic: "I don't know... LET GO OF ME!!" Maryssa: "What?!" Raven: "Vamonos" Gabriel: "Let go of me" Nicolas: "Go to bed" 2. What makes me happy? Jean-Alexandre: "I don't know, books" Dominic: "Uh... (thinking...) coffee..." Maryssa: "Books" Raven: "Soccer, a clean house, books" Gabriel: "Nothing" Nicolas: "Hugs!!" (hugs me) 3. What makes me sad? Jean-Alexandre: "I don't know, bad s...

In which I slap myself on the back

... well sort of... I just kind of thought it really funny when, last night, after I scored two goals on a team we haven't really played before, suddenly they were all like:  "No! No! Stay on her!!"  And "Look, this is what she does... watch her..." Uh guys, as much as I enjoy being talked about like that, (it's good for the ego) I'm not really that good.  (Actually, the one you normally have to watch for is Jean-Alexandre, but he wasn't feeling all that good yesterday, so he didn't stand out much.  But he's the goal scorer.) The secret to my goal scoring (and to our team wins) is team work.  The rest of my team does all the work, while I stand somewhere near the net and wait for an opportunity.  Well okay, I do some work too, but seriously, I don't run as fast as the guys, so they still do more work than I do.  Also, we pass.  A lot.  Many of the other teams don't seem to have that connection, that pass-back-and-forth-all-the-t...

Catholic Publicity in Québec Schools Banned

I found out from Maryssa's catechism teacher last night that the parishes are no longer allowed to send announcements for catechism through the school system anymore.  So, parents who want their children to go to catechism will no longer be informed of the availability of classes, nor the inscription times.  The parish will have to rely on ads in newspapers from now on.  (If that doesn't get banned too in future) Now if no one were allowed to put publicity through schools, that would be one thing, but I happen to have sent publicity through my kids' school myself, in hopes of recruiting new players for my daughter's soccer team.  I have also received all kinds of publicity from summer camps and other places through the school. So it's quite obvious that we are only banning one group here. Wouldn't you call that discrimination? I sure do. What about my right to information?  Why is it that a minority "élite" can decide for me what kind of info...

Going into withdrawal

It is getting bad enough that I am considering (although not seriously) bandaging up my arm and going to play in the friendly game on Thursday. Don't worry, I'm not going to do it, (not this week anyway), but I have been thinking about it. I won't do it, because quite frankly, something as simple as just going shopping is enough to make my arm ache. I was alone , this morning (the 4 year old monster was at pre-school) and I did one store, lifted a few dresses off a rack, looked through a few boxes of shoes, and that was enough to make the arm ache. Heck, typing makes it sore. (Yes, I will be getting off in a minute.) So I figure, I may not be quite ready for a soccer game this Thursday. I'm starting to get the shakes already...

No bruise this week...

... but on the other hand, I happened to be right beside someone on the other team, when they lost the ball. I immediately took it, turned around, and found noone in front of me. So I did what any self-respecting soccer player does, I ran for the goal. She shoots. She scores!!!

He did it again

As often happens on weekends, I found myself wondering once again, how I was going to make it to mass with my children. Maryssa had a game in Saint-Lambert (Longueuil - just on the South Shore of Montreal) at 10 in the morning. She had to be there for 9:30. Could there be no worse time to have a game? Unless you're lucky enough to google a Church right next door to the soccer game with a mass right before or right after, 8:30 mass is too late and 11:00 mass is too early. Jean-Alexandre had a game at home at 2:00 pm (had to be there for 1:30). So mass in Montreal at 12:00 would have been cutting it really close. (Ending at 1:00 and with a 30 minute drive back home) At exactly 10:45 am, Maryssa's soccer game was winding up, and suddenly I heard church bells ringing. Right.next.door. I hadn't seen it through the trees, but at the other end of the park, across the road was a Church, calling the faithful to 11:00 mass. Maryssa's game ended at 10:55. By then I had mo...

Gala

Image
Every year, the Soccer club Celtix du Haut-Richelieu has a "soirée méritas" or "merit evening", where it recognizes the efforts of players, teams, coaches and volunteers. This year, the club has grown so much that they decided to do a gala instead, with a brunch. They also divided up the teams into different categories; Masculine Juvenile A, Masculine Juvenile AA, Feminine Juvenile A, Feminine Juvenile AA, Senior AA and AAA. For each categorie, three people were nominated for the following prizes: "Gants d'Or" (Golden Gloves) for best goaler, "Défenseur d'Or" (Golden defense) for best defense, and "Souliers d'Or" (Golden Shoes) for best offense. For each team, there were also three people from the team nominated for the following prizes: Team spirit and Player of the Season. In each category, three teams were nominated for the prize Team of the Season. They also had prizes for the volunteer of the Season, Coach of the Season...

Picture this

It was just one of those days today, that start off with sun in the morning, a bit cool because it is the end of summer, but quickly warming up. We left for Granby in the morning, to go to Jean-Alexandre's tournament. Today his team was playing in the semi-finals and from there, either moving on to the game for the gold orthe game for the bronze. In the first half of the game, the Celtix (our team) scored 4 points one of which Jean-Alexandre, although he plays defense, way in the back (11 on a field), managed to put in. Noone scored in the second half. So we were happily on our way to the game for the gold. Within the first 10 minutes of the first half, the Celtix scored 3 points. When you have 11 on a field, you have the option of mixing up your formation. For example you can have 4 defense (last line) 3 demi (middle line) and 4 offence (first line - the ones who score most of your goals). You can also have 3 defense, 4 demi and 4 offence... or whatever. The coach of the o...

Sore Losers

Played the last game of the season for the adult recreational league tonight. We happened to play against the team that has a guy on it who, all three times we have played against them, has managed to really stand out. In a bad way. He thinks he's better than everyone else. He commands his team, tells them what to do, acts like he's really good, and then makes mistakes. He's not bad, he's a fairly good player, maybe even one of the better ones on his team, but he's nowhere near as good as he seems to think he is. And he plays rough. Noone likes to play against him because he doesn't seem to care if he hurts you or not. One of the guys on my team got hurt. He couldn't stand up. People were going to carry him off the field, but then the referee blew twice. Half-time. So we just let him sit there to catch his breath and relax before getting off. Mister Big-shot started getting all excited and wanted us to get him off the field right away. No matter that people ...

Sports - Why even bother?

This summer I will be playing Monday evenings, either at 7:30 or 8:30, at the soccer stadium here in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu. Jean-Alexandre will also be playing soccer on Monday evenings, starting in May, around 7:00 or so in the evening, half the time in town at one of the outdoor fields at the military base, which is, by the way, not in the same half of town as the soccer stadium. The other half of the time he won't even be in town. Dominic will also be playing soccer on Monday evenings, starting in May, partly in town at the military base fields and partly out of town at around 7:00 or so as well. Maryssa will be playing at any one of the more than 20 soccer fields scattered around town on Monday evenings (as well as Wednesday evenings) from 6:30 to 7:30. Only Gabriel is left to be confirmed, and it's a fifty-fiftly chance he plays on Monday and Wednesday from 6:30 to 7:30 as well. I can't separate myself into 5!!! Even with two parents, it's impossible, because one o...

A Few Pics

Last weekend, we went to my parents' place and on the way home, stopped in Ottawa so the older boys could go to a FIFA U-20 world cup 1/4 finals game. It was Argentina against Mexico. (Argentina won) I got to see my niece (and goddaughter) for the first time, and visit a bit with my brother Cecil, his wife Jane and Jane's sister, Mary. I also got to visit (for a very short period) with my aunt Pauline and uncle Eddie, who were visiting their grandchildren. (My cousin and her husband live in the same village as my parents). Here are a few pictures of us all at Grammie and Grandpapa's house, Saturday evening: Claire, one month old Jean-Alexandre and Claire The family: Marc, myself, Jane Dominic, Cecil, Gabriel, Jean-Alexandre, Claire, Grammie Anne, Maryssa, Grandpapa Jean-Nil, Nicolas The cousins: Gabriel, Maryssa, Jean-Alexandre, Claire, Dominic, Nicolas Sunday morning, we went to mass with Grammie, then ordered pizza for lunch. My Soccer Nightmare

Starting next week, on Mondays, Jean-Alexandre and Dominic both practice from 5:00 to 6:30, but not in the same place. It's not so bad, they're only about a 5 min drive apart. But Gabriel plays from 6:30 to 7:30. On the other side of the river. 10 mins away. I have like 0 minutes in which to get everyone into the car, get the other kid from the practice, and drive everyone to the next game. Oh for the technology of Star Trek. "Beam me over Scotty!" Wait, I'm not done yet. Because half the time on Monday evenings, I play at 7:30. Which means that I have exactly 0 minutes in which to pile everyone back into the car and get to my own game every other week. Then there are Thursdays. Maryssa plays in Iberville at 6:30 every Thursday. Dominic and Jean-Alexandre (once he finally gets his passport, if he ever gets it) play almost every Thursday at 7:00 in any number of cities in this area. Which often means an hour's drive to get there. And they have to b...

BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

J'ai compté un but! J'ai compté un but!!! Après notre match regulier, il n'y avait pas personne qui jouait, alors on nous a proposé de rester et de jouer un peu pour le fun. Alors j'ai dit que je voulais essayer de jouer en attaque, et.... ... j'ai compté un but!!!

Played Soccer tonight...

Contrary to most Northern Canadians, I have never liked hockey much. (Except maybe when Wayne Gretzky was playing.) But thanks to a childhood friend, I have always enjoyed soccer. Unfortunately, when you live in a Northern town, you don't get to play soccer much. So I played a lot of basketball instead, which is just as much fun. But now that soccer is fast becoming one of the (if not the) most popular sports among Canadian Youth, and its popularity is increasing among the parents of said youth, and I actually live in a community where there is a soccer stadium, where you can actually play soccer even in winter... I get to play real organised soccer. With actual rules and referees. Last week, I finally got my first pair of real soccer shoes. Interior ones, with the mini rubber cleats that won't tear up the artificial turf, but keep you from sliding off to one side when you want to turn quickly. Tonight was the first chance I had to try them out, and now I wonder why I di...

The newest addition to my collection of Shoes

Image
Check out my new (to me) soccer shoes. I bought them used, (by a good player apparently, so hopefully some of the "good player vibe" will wear off on me) and I can't wait to try them out on the turf.
