Catholic during coronavirus

Image
Since the beginning of the coronavirus shutdown, eating was never banned, only eating out in restaurants. Talking and writing were never banned, only restricted to the bare essentials in public places. Praying was never banned, only praying in groups in public places. Listening to music was never banned, only going to public concerts. Drinking alcohol was never banned, only drinking at public bars. And get this: masses were never banned, only public masses.  As Catholics, we believe that the Holy Mass is the most important prayer. Jesus's sacrifice on the cross is what saved the world and Holy Mass is the continuation of that sacrifice. The continuation, not the repetition, as protestants think, (there is a difference) of that sacrifice. On the night that he instituted the sacrament of the Eucharist, Jesus said: "Do this in memory of me." That's a direct order, and it's in the Bible. God made himself man and came to earth to save us from sin, but He doesn't ju...

Why What is Happening with the Wet'suwet'en First Nation is Important

Image
(Originally posted on thinkspot)              I'm going to try to put some perspective on the Wet'suwet'en situation here, to the best of my knowledge, (which isn't perfect and this may need to be tweaked later - if anyone sees anything that is not exact - let me know).              To begin with, you should understand that First Nations people (or Indigenous peoples) are separated into different cultural groups (similar language and social structure. ) For instance, you have the Iroquois , who are not a nation, but a group of nations including Cayuga, Cherokee, Huron, Mohawk, etc. You also have the Algonquians , another group of nations which include Cree, Ojibway, Algonquin, etc.               Within these groups or families, you sometimes have smaller families. And within these smaller groups, you have the different nations (or tribes,) and within those nations, you h...

Pomp and Ceremony

Image
But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes.  ‘Friend,’ he asked, ‘how did you get in here without wedding clothes?’ The man was speechless.  Then the king told the attendants, ‘Tie him hand and  foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will  be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’   (Matt 22:11-13)   I came across another version of the "Which of These Made a Vow of Poverty?" memes on facebook the other day, and I re-posted it with my own commentary, but I'd like to add a few things; one was pointed out by a friend, and the other I came across while reading Bible stories to my two youngest. WHAT is the point of this meme? That it is morally wrong to wear ceremonial robes to a ceremony? So what now? We can't wear wedding dresses to a wedding? We can't wear graduation robes to a graduation? Military personnel ...

Priesthood, Celibacy and Respect for others...

Image
Imagine this scenario for a minute: You ordain a straight priest.  You ask him to take vows of obedience, chastity and celibacy.  Then you put him in a women's monastery for the rest of his life, where he will be sharing meals, activities, common rooms and bathrooms with all kinds of women, many of them young and attractive.  Does expecting him to remain chaste and celibate while spending most of his time with women sound a little far-fetched? But then can one expect the same of a gay priest who spends most of his time in a community with other men, some of them also gay, and many of whom are quite attractive? For a man who has no desire at all for marriage with a woman, to be asked to give up marriage and live all his life with men he is attracted to is either an excruciating, intolerable, practically impossible sacrifice in the case where he does remain faithful to his vows of celibacy and chastity, or it is not a sacrifice at all. Can a gay priest ever really und...

Illegal Immigration

" An 18-year-old undocumented student named Jessica Bravo made an appointment to meet with California Representative Dana Rohrabacher to share her story. She was met with yelling, statements like "I hate illegals" and veiled threats at deportation. " Presente.org You know, I have no trouble with a nation wanting to have control over its borders.  It's the the hatred with which so many people treat illegal immigrants that I have a problem with.  See, until you've lived in the kind of situation these people have lived in, you can never really understand why they would be willing to risk their lives and freedom to come illegally to another country. I also find it quite ironic that the country that still HAS NOT closed down the School of the Americas, which trains some of the "finest" terrorists out there and sends them back to their own countries to spread terror there, also refuses to acknowledge that any of it is their problem.  "We are ...

Amnesty International and Pussy Riot

Image
I get e-mails from Amnesty International, and most of the time, I support them.  I don't give them money, because they do support abortion, but every once in awhile, I'll sign their petitions, because mostly, they work to free political prisoners, who, for the most part, are working for change in places where corrupt governments are in power, and doing it in a respectful, peaceful way.  This is not exactly the case for Pussy Riot: Pussy Riot is a Russian feminist punk-rock collective based in Moscow. Founded in August 2011, it has a variable membership of approximately 11 women ranging in age from about 20 to 33, who wear brightly colored balaclavas and use only nicknames during interviews. They stage unauthorized provocative guerrilla performances in unusual public locations, which are edited into music videos and posted on the Internet. Their lyrical themes include feminism, LGBT rights, opposition to Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom they regard as a dictat...

... we're actually a species of dinosaur . Barilium is a genus of iguanodontian dinosaur which was first described as a species of Iguanodon ( I. dawsoni ) by Richard Lydekker in 1888, the specific epithet honouring the discoverer Charles Dawson. In 2010 it was reclassified as a separate genus by David Norman. The generic name Barilium is derived from Greek barys , "heavy", and Latin ilium. Later in 2010, Kenneth Carpenter and Yusuke Ishida independently assigned it to the new genus Torilion , which is thus a junior objective synonym of Barilium . It is known from two partial skeletons found near St Leonards-on-Sea in East Sussex England from the middle Valanginian Lower Cretaceous Wadhurst Clay. Lydekker based the species on the syntype series BMNH R798, 798a, 803-805, 806, 798b, 802, 802a and 799-801. Norman chose NHMUK R 798 and R802, a dorsal vertebra and a left ilium, as the lectotype. A contemporary of Hypselospinus (also once thought to be a species of Igua...

It's not about "rights"

The whole contraception debate going on right now in the US?  It's not about anyone's right to contraception.  Contraception hasn't been banned, you can still go out and pay for your own contraception to cover your own personal needs.  Actually, half the time, you don't even need to buy them because they get handed out for free. That's beside the point.  If you want to avoid having children, that is your decision, and it is normal that you should pay for that decision.  It's not like pregnancy is a disease to be avoided.  It's more like an option, a private decision.  One that shouldn't implicate the rest of us. Especially those of us who believe contraception is wrong. If a non-Catholic company wants to include contraception in their health-care insurance, that is their business.  If a Catholic company does not want to include contraception in their health-care insurance, that should also be their business. If you have a problem with that...

Pedophiles and the Church

I just read yet another article on the subject of this "plague within the Catholic Church", so bear with me while I rant once again. According to this article (I think it was Le Journal de Montréal), pedophilia has been a plague within the Church all throughout history, the first record of it being in 300 something after Christ. Now, I won't deny this, but to put this into perspective, I can pretty much guarantee you that pedophilia has been a scourge EVERYWHERE for a very long time.  Not just within the Church, and most likely in higher numbers outside of the Church.  As is the case today. I have known a lot of priests and religious, and a lot of Catholics.  I do not personally know any pedophile priests, nor do I personally know any victims of priests.  However, one of the ex-coaches of my children's soccer club is a pedophile, now serving time in jail.  (Why do I not hear anyone questioning the integrity of the soccer club?)  Also, someone living a...

Imagine a Stupid Song

I cannot imagine a more unfitting song than John Lennon's "Imagine" sung to help Haiti. I have come across a number of artists here and there, singing to raise funds for Haiti, and choosing that song, of all songs. To like a song, I have to like the lyrics. I hate the lyrics of Imagine. Imagine there's no heaven It's easy if you try No hell below us Above us only sky Ah yes, an atheist's song to represent the vibrant faith of the Haitian people, who, in the face of incredible poverty and destruction continue, not only to believe in, but to praise GOD. How utterly ironic. They don't need John Lennon or his song. "Imagine there's no Heaven", now there's a depressing thought. To quote the great conceited fool John Lennon himself; "Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink. I needn't argue with that; I'm right and I will be proved right. We're more popular than Jesus now; I don't know which will go first - ...

I don't get this

I'm on a mailing list that sends articles and commentaries from a conservative viewpoint. I have no idea how I got on it, becasue I did not sign up. Did someone else give him my e-mail address? Did I inadvertantly sign up just because I signed some petition or completed some survey somewhere? Who knows. I almost unsubscribed. But then I decided against it, because, well there are interesting articles in there, and because it's refreshing to have a non-liberal viewpoint for a change. But then there are also commentaries like this one: Bush's wise words By Catherine S. Nelson National Post Published: Tuesday, March 10, 2009 Re: Death-Row Inmate Hopes For Transfer, March 7. Although I am not usually one to quote George W. Bush, I think one of his statements from back when he was governor of Texas is worth recalling in the case of Ronald Smith. It was at a time when a Canadian was on death row in Texas. As the usual "anti-death penalty" suspects gathered to wring thei...

Obama approves EMRYONIC stem cell research

Adult stem cell research, which has proven effective and useful in the treatment of many ailments to date, was already approved and was supported by Bush. Embryonic stem cell reasearch on the other hand, is unethical, and to date, has offered no results. http://www.proudtobecanadian.ca/index/weblog/16899/ In a nutshell: CBC’s reporter Paul Hunter misleads Canadians re EMBRYONIC stem cell research Written by Joel Johannesen Read Comments/Make Comments (There's 0 so far) Either he’s stupid or he’s purposely lying to Canadians. Sadly this is the choice at CBC today, and at any of the left-wing media, which seem to have an agenda. And it’s important that we consider the ramifications of a taxpayer-funded state-owned news media which employs stupid and/or deceitful reporters and staff who seem to be leading an agenda and swaying opinions. This is my opinion. After live coverage on the CBC of President Obama signing an executive order allowing federal funding for EMBRYONIC stem cel...

Missionary in Paraguay returns Award

ZENIT, The world seen from Rome News Agency ================================================== Cases Like Eluana's Can Have Happy Endings Missionary Rejects Award in Protest of Italy's Euthanasia Ruling ASUNCIÓN, Paraguay, FEB. 16, 2009 (Zenit.org).- Father Aldo Trento has been caring for patients like Eluana Englaro for years, so when Italy refused to protect her life, he protested by returning one of Italy's highest honors. Since 1989 Father Trento has been one of the best-known missionaries of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Charles Borromeo in Paraguay. He is 62 years old and is the head of a clinic for the terminally ill in Asunción. On June 2, the Italian president, Giorgio Napolitano, conferred the title "Knight of the Order of the Star of Solidarity" on Father Trento. Last Wednesday, the priest returned the honor to Napolitano in the wake of the latter's refusal to sign the special decree that would have saved the life of Eluana Englaro, who had been in...

Arrest Warrent issued for Sudanese President

The New York Times reported last night that the judges of the International Criminal Court have decided to issue an arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir. While this is an extraordinary step in the direction of justice, it presents real danger in the short-term. There is every reason to believe that Bashir may react by lashing out against civilians, aid workers or peacekeeping forces. We need a clear, bold message from President Obama that the U.S. will not stand for retribution from Khartoum. He must name a high-level diplomat with the stature, mandate and authority to bring peace to Sudan, protection to its people and accountability to the perpetrators—today. Click here to tell President Obama to put someone in charge of Darfur immediately. The ICC has never before indicted a head of state. This extraordinary development adds legal weight to a long obvious truth: primary responsibility for the atrocities in Darfur rests with the regime that Bashir heads. Now we're ...

Suleman

Heard the morning people on Chom this morning talking about Suleman. Calling her stupid and the doctors as well. Now I don't expect everyone to understand about people believing that their embryos are already human beings that deserve life, but could they at least bring out the whole story and try to understand another person's point of view? The way they talked, for one, there was no mention of the embryos already being there, only that she decides to go and have all these kids when she already had 6. Apparently, there were less than 8 embryos, and she was only expecting one to survive. Eight babies resulted because of fertility hormones and replication of embryos, so some of these babies are identical twins or even triplets. Again, the mother was not going to purposely abort the babies, so what could she do? If she really can't care for all of them, I am sure that many people would be very happy not to have to go to China to adopt. If she does keep them all, she has...

Embryos given life... Mother scorned

LOS ANGELES, February 3, 2009 (LifeSiteNews. com) - According to the grandmother of octuplets born in California last week, rather than allow her leftover frozen embryos to be destroyed, dissected in a laboratory, or frozen indefinitely, their mother chose to give them a chance at life by implanting them in her womb. Little did she expect to give birth to eight relatively healthy babies, or to be deluged first by congratulations, then by scorn, as critics questioned her choice not to selectively abort as a single mother of reportedly little means. Suleman, anonymous at the time, made headlines last Monday when she gave birth to the longest-living set of octuplets on record at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in West Los Angeles. The babies, six boys and two girls, are reported to continue growing in strength. "My family and I are ecstatic about all of their arrivals," said the mother in a statement following the births. The octuplets' grandmother described the babies as "s...

British Environmental Advisor Backs Population Control, Two Kids Per Family

http://www.lifenews.com/int1070.html How's that for a fricken idiot? Has he checked the birth rate in the UK recently? In 2007 it was 1.90 kids, just under 2 kids per woman. In 2008, it went down to 1.66 per woman . That's already quite a bit less than 2 kids per woman. If a few rare people are having more than two kids, it only balances out the many more that aren't having kids at all... I hate it when people say stupid things, hoping the rest of us are stupid enough to believe anything. Maybe, just maybe, the current economic problems are due in part to the DECLINE of the birthrate? Did he ever think about that? Maybe, just maybe, all those OLDER people not working anymore, but needing to be supported by a constantly declining younger population is causing part of the problem? Did he ever think of that? Maybe, just maybe, if you criminalize women (like China does) for having more than 2 children, the birth rate will be then so low, (because of all the women STILL not havi...
