Language mix-ups

There are some words that sound exactly the same but mean totally different things in two different languages. Take glace (French) and glass (English) for example. Glace is ice in English and for some reason, my children seem to forget that one says ICE in English and not glace. "Oh look, there's glass on the pond!" for example, or even worse: "Want glace in your drink?" (Now who would want glass in their drink?) Well, I did something similar yesterday as we were taking our skates off and putting our boots back on. I don't remember the exact sentence but it was something like: "Did you find your botte?" Which sounds a lot like: Did you find your butt?"

So much to say, no time to write

Here I am once again, doing the one-handed typing thing... very annoying when one wants to get something down... There are so many things I have felt like writing about recently, that I think, "I should write about this in my blog" and then I don't have time and when I do have time, I either don't remember what it was I wanted to write about, or it no longer seems significant. So, I guess we won't be getting much interesting out of me for awhile yet...

Went skating yesterday

We all went skating yesterday on the Chambly Canal. It was la Fête des Mitaines . (The mitten festival) I wanted to take pictures but I forgot the camera. It turned out much better than I thought it would. I thought Dominic especially would fall once, get upset and not want to try anymore, but everyone seemed to have a lot of fun, and Dominic didn't want to leave. I didn't think we'd stay much more than1/2 hour before everyone wanted to leave, but that wasn't the case at all. We even got to see a small show put on by local figure skaters. That was cool.

Butt Dust

"Dear Lord," the preacher began with arms extended and a rapturous look on his upturned face, "without you we are but dust..." He would have continued, but at that moment one very obedient little girl (who was listening carefully) leaned over to her mother and asked quite audibly in her shrill little girl voice, "Mommy, WHAT is butt dust?" Church was pretty much over at that point...

A friend of mine is entering a monastery on the 24th. He'd already done a month with the Cistercians at Oka, and feels that this is his place. He wants to join the community. So, we had a party the weekend before last, which ended up being at my house, since there is more space here, to say goodbye to him. It was a wonderful afternoon.

Enjoying Nicolas

The children are back to school since yesterday. That means I have less supervising to do (at least for most of the day). No more fighting to resolve,... however that doesn't mean I have a lot more time to do stuff in. Right now, I'm here, typing with both hands since Nicolas is asleep, but most of the time these days, I sit down here while he is nursing, which means I only have one hand, and therefore do not write much. When he isn't nursing, I have been busy elsewhere trying to get stuff done. It took me almost 2 hours to take down the Christmas decorations yesterday, it shouldn't have taken more than a half-hour normally. I kept getting interupted, and Nicolas wanted to drink all the time. I take back what I said about newborns not being all that cute (just after Christmas). I must have been pretty tired. Nicolas is cute. Of course he'll be even cuter later on, but in a different way he is cute now. Maybe sweet is a better word? I'm still tired, and this co-s

What's in a name?

Why Coucoumelle? When I was looking for a good online user name, something original, I picked up the French dictionnary and flipped through it in search of a word that few would know but that would sound good. I came across coucoumelle. I like the sound of that. It sounded like a name and it had coucou in the front. It just sounded like it could describe someone popping out and saying cou cou! I'm here! I read the description and found out that it was actually the name of a mushroom. That was great because my husband likes to look for mushrooms in the woods. He took a course on how to recognize good mushrooms. So the name also reminds me of my husband. And that is why I call myself Coucoumelle.
